Peace Pole Activation!

By Professors Gabriela Pasquel and Patricia Ann Talley*

Our community of Zihuatanejo was featured in the “Peace Pole Activation” online ZOOM event that took place during World Unity Week in June. The event was sponsored by May Peace Prevail on Earth International™, a global not-for-profit charity that develops and promotes peace activities for communities and youth. The foundation’s primary mission is to plant Peace Poles around the world. The organization is a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

Peace Poles are an international symbol of unity. They represent a community’s commitment to work together to educate and empower our youth to become a new generation of thinkers and doers who will work for the betterment of humanity.

Peace Pole Activation!

Fumi Johns Stewart, the Executive Director of the foundation was the host of the event. Ms. Johns has visited Zihuatanejo twice, once in 2010 to inaugurate our first Peace Pole, and then again in February 2020 to launch the Amigo@s de la Paz Sustainable Tourism Program.

Over 40 presenters from every continent around the world shared their stories about the Peace Poles.

We had the honor to tell the world about ours!

  • The FIRST Peace Monument of its kind erected in Central Zihuatanejo in 2010
  • The FIRST Peace Monument Park constructed by FONATUR, the Federal Tourism Board
  • The FIRST Peace Pole in a Hotel Lobby – Las Brisas Ixtapa and one under construction at Catalina Beach Resort
  • The FIRST Peace Pole in a Restaurant – Villas Paraiso Restaurant in Ixtapa; and
  • The FIRST Peace Pole in a school in Zihuatanejo – Instituto Lizardi

We invite you to watch a recording of the Peace Activation event. (Our presentation starts at 1:59:00)
