“Museo de la Mascara” Displays Historic & Traditional Masks
A new attraction in Acapulco, the “Museo de la Mascara” (Mask Museum), has masks on display that show the history, culture, and traditions of Mexico and the area.
Masks from Africa & the Orient
Acapulco was and still is an important port city in Mexico. During colonial days, Spanish ships traveled between Africa, the Orient, and New Spain (Mexico) for trade, bringing a diverse mixture of people into the area. This history is captured in historical masks.
Traditional Masks from Guerrero and Other Parts of Mexico
The most prominent masks in the museum are the traditional masks from Guerrero, like the “Devil Mask” that is used in the Day of the Dead celebrations in the Costa Chica region.
Other traditional masks from throughout Mexico are also on display, including a collection of masks representing animals.
