There are so many special events and cultural activities happening in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Guerrero that we are publishing this update so you won’t miss out!  If you are up north, Come on down! New International Airline Flights to Ixtapa Zihuatanejo for 2014.

Monday – Saturday, 7:30 p.m., PATRICIA CARRION PERFORMS AT PUERTA DEL SOL RESTAURANT in La Madera Beach:  Come out and enjoy a marvelous evening of great food and fantastic jazz music by Patricia Carrion, who represented Zihuatanejo at the Jazz Festival of Quebec last year.  She sings in English, Spanish and French.  See the menu for Puerta del Sol Restaurant on our Restaurants & Menus Page.

Fridays at Sunset, DANCING EXPRESSIONS “ATARDECER COSTEÑO”:  What a wonderful expression of dance, at sunset along the coast!  Enjoy dancing with your partner, at La Plaza de la Libre Expresión, located directly behind the main bus stop in Central Zihuatanejo.  Remember these days.

Saturday, January 18, 4:00 p.m., ARTE MARUJA PRESENTS “EARTH, SEA AND THE UNIVERSE” EXHIBIT: Join us for a cocktail party for the opening of exhibition of these artistic works.  The studio is located on Calle Nicolas Bravo, at the corner of Cuauhtémoc in Centro Zihuatanejo.

Saturday, January 18, 6:00 p.m. – Saturday, February 15, GRACE RELFE and TAMARA ART SHOW:  Visit the Museo Arqueológico (Archeological Museum) in Zihuatanejo, located along the waterfront, to see an exhibition of paintings by these local artists.  The theme is “Entre sirenas y gallos y algo mas” (Between mermaid and rooster and something more).

Monday, January 20, INTERNATIONAL CELEBRATION FOR DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. NOBEL PEACE PRIZE LAUREATE:  People in Mexico and around the world will pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a hero of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Martin Luther King dreamed that all inhabitants of the United States would be judged by their personal qualities and not by the color of their skin.  Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

The day is dedicated to serving your community.  Act!  “Anyone can be great, because anyone can serve,” Dr. Martin Luther, King, Jr.

Members of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force of Southfield, Michigan will be special guests at the Celebration of Peace in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Mexico, February 4-9, 2014.  The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force sponsored an exhibit about Afro-Mexicans in Guerrero.  See: www.FreedomPathways.org.

Tuesday, January 21 and Thursday, January 23, M-DOCK BAND BENEFIT CONCERT FOR ZIHUATANEJO SAILFEST/POR LOS NIÑOS CHARITY.   The M-Dock Band from Springfield, Missouri will be here for the 13th year, performing two benefit concerts on behalf of the Zihuatanejo Sailfest/Por Los Niños.  Last year they raised $37,800 pesos for the cause.  The band has been playing great music in the Springfield area for almost 20 years. The band plays a variety of hits from the 60’s – 90’s.  They will welcome a special guest, Mexican recording artist Paco Padilla, whose music ranges from the folkloric to techno-rumba.

Tuesday, January 21, 8:00 p.m., El Pueblito Restaurant in Zihuatanejo, $100+ peso suggested donation.

Thursday, January 23, 8:00 p.m. at Frank’s in Ixtapa, $250 donation includes an open bar for beer and national drinks. 

Monday, January 27, INTERNATIONAL DAY OF COMMEMORATION OF VICTIMS OF THE HOLOCAUST:  The United Nations designates January 27 – the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp – as an annual International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.  The 2014 observance is centered on the theme, “Journeys through the Holocaust”. The Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Program is partnering with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to make a new film resource and educational package available to educators around the world in all United Nations official languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish.  To stream the DVD in the classroom in English and obtain additional educational resources, please visit www.ushmm.org. Educators may request a copy of the DVD with subtitles by writing to holocaustremembrance@un.org.

Friday, January 31, – Sunday, February 2, “LA MAR Y LA PAZ” (THE SEA AND PEACE) INTERNATIONAL POETRY CONFERENCE AND RECITAL:  Join us for this spectacular international event, hosted by the International Society of Writers, Poets and Artists.  The conference starts at 5:00 p.m. and the recitals at 6:00 p.m.  Last year, this annual event was held in Argentina, and next year it will be held in Los Angeles, California.  But, for 2014, this conference and recital about the “sea and peace” is being held here in Zihuatanejo . . . in an ideal location at the Museo Arqueológico (Archeological Museum), located along the waterfront next to the Peace Monument! SEA and PEACE!

Poets from 12 countries, including Spain, the USA, Argentina, Peru and Columbia and from 14 states in Mexico will recite their works about the tranquility of the sea and the harmony of peace.   Recitals will be in Spanish and English.

Activities will commence at the Peace Monument, located next to the museum.

Friday, January 31 – Sunday, February 2, 17th ANNUAL MARIACHI FESTIVAL AND MEXICAN TRADITIONS:  Direct from our Sister City Morelia, this festival will include music, food and folklore.  Tickets are $200 Pesos.

  • Friday, January 31, 8:00 p.m. – Grand Opening with two free concerts at the Kiosko in Ixtapa, in front of Nueva Zelanda Restaurant.
  • Saturday, February 1, 8:30 p.m. – Gala Night with Mariachi concerts, dancing and folklore at the Convention Center in Hotel Krystal in Ixtapa.  Tickets are $200 Pesos.
  • Sunday, February 2, 6:00 p.m. – Closing ceremony and free concerts at Cancha Municipal (main basketball court) in Zihuatanejo.

PREVIEW FOR FEBRUARY 2014

Tuesday – Sunday, February 4-9, 2014, CELEBRATION OF PEACE IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE ZIHUATANEJO SAILFEST:  Students, educators, civic groups, business representatives, tourists and families from around the world are invited to 4th Annual Celebration of Peace in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Mexico and Re-Certification as a “Culture of Peace Community” during the Zihuatanejo SailFest, February 4-9, 2014, sponsored by the” Por Los Niños” Charity.  Activities will include music, art and entertainment by the children of Zihuatanejo – all to build schools and to provide student scholarships.

Liberato “Levi” C. Bautista, Assistant General Secretary for United Nations and International Affairs of the General Board of Church and Society, a non-governmental agency (NGO) in consultative status with the United Nations, will visit Guerrero, Mexico for the first time to officiate at the event.
