Take a Virtual Tour & Get Recipes for Flavored Salts

Sea salt is a food product that tourists often take home as a souvenir from Mexico. Sea salt is a global flavor enhancer. Cooks around the world use it in their favorite dishes.

Mexico has the largest sea salt factory in the world! Here is a virtual tour, some cooking tips, and recipes for you to enjoy!

The World’s Largest Salt Factory

Exportadora de Sal (“Salt Explorers Inc.”), located in the town of Guerrero Negro in Baja California Sur, is the largest salt factory in the world.

The salt factory is located in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur.

Guerrero Negro is the largest town located in the municipality of Mulegé in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur (BCS). It has a population of about 14,000 people.

Daniel Keith Ludwig (1897-1992)

The town was founded in 1957 when an American, Daniel Keith Ludwig (1897 – 1992), built a salt factory there to supply the demand for salt in the western United States.

Ludwig, born in South Haven, Michigan, was a shipping magnate, businessman, hotel owner, and billionaire. He pioneered the construction of supertankers in Japan and was the founder of Exportadora de Sal in Mexico.

The salt mine is located around the Ojo de Liebre coastal lagoon to take advantage of its strong salinity. Ludwig’s company grew to become the greatest salt mine in the world, with a production of seven million tons of salt per year, exporting to the Pacific basin, especially Japan and Korea, and to the United States, Canada, Taiwan, and New Zealand.

Let’s Cook!  – A Sanitation Tip

Sea salt has a wonderful flavor! Cooks use it to flavor meats, poultry, salads, and other dishes in place of regular table salt. Wherever you buy the sea salt, we recommend sanitizing it before you use it. Follow these easy steps.

  1. Heat your oven to 425 F
  2. Place the sea salt in pie pans
  3. Bake the sea salt for 5 minutes, stirring and turning it halfway through the baking time
  4. Place the sanitized sea salt in bags, jars, or plastic containers and store in a dry place

Flavored Sea Salt Recipes

Here are some wonderful recipes for making flavored sea salt.1

Bourbon Sea Salt

Liquor and salt? Absolutely! Salty and sweet flavors combine to make a taste that is very irresistible.

You can combine sea salt with bourbon and sugar syrup to create a rich, deep-tasting salt that you can sprinkle on baked goods.

So wonderful!

  • Simmer 1 cup of bourbon in a saucepan over medium heat until it is reduced to about 1/4 cup
  • Combine the bourbon reduction, 1/2 cup sea salt, and 1/2 cup sugar in a food processor, pulsing until it becomes sandy in texture
  • Spread the mixture on a rimmed baking sheet
  • Bake it in the oven turned on its lowest setting until the moisture has evaporated – several hours or overnight

Lemon Sea Salt

Salt combines beautifully with a variety of different flavors, especially lemon (or lime). Salt and citrus combine to create a seasoning you can use for every meal of the day. Sprinkle it on fresh vegetables, salads, and fish.

Mix 1/2 cup sea salt, 1/2 cup lemon juice, and the zest of 1 lemon in a bowl

  • Spread the mixture on a rimmed baking sheet
  • Bake it in the oven turned on its lowest setting until the moisture has evaporated – several hours or overnight
  • Scrape the lemon salt into a container

Smoked Sea Salt

The rich, fragrant taste of smoky sea salt is great on baked potatoes, pizza, and other savory dishes. The next time that you smoke a piece of meat, put a tray of sea salt in there, too.

Line a tray or a piece of sturdy aluminum foil with 1/2 cup or more of sea salt. Allow it to smoke in the smoker for several hours, then pour it into a container. Wow!
