Sergio Peñaloza of México Negro A.C. Receives Award of Civil Merit

Recognized by the State of Guerro for Leadership in Human Rights

On October 27, 2020, Professor Pedro Sergio Peñaloza Pérez, who was then the President of México Negro A.C., received the “Award of Civil Merit Chauhtemoc.” Professor Peñaloza now serves as an appointed member of the lower legislative house, representing the Afromexican community.

The occassion marked the 171st anniversary of the State of Guerrero.  The ceremony was held at the auditorium of Jose Joaquin de Herrera in the Governor’s Office in Chilpancingo, the state capital. Decorations and prizes were awarded to outstanding people from Guerrero in different areas.

Professor Peñaloza was recognized for his 30 years of struggle for his leadership in the movement for social, political, and economic development of Afromexicans. The Ceremony conducted by Governor Hector Astidillo.

The State of Guerrero is named after President Vicente Guerrero, who was of African descent. The state is one of the most diverse in the country with populations of Indigenous, African, and Asian descendants resulting from the Transpacific Trade Route. Watch this short video about the state.
