Imagine telling the story of Mexico and not including the Aztecs, Mayans, or the Spanish. Yet, for over 500 years, the African presence in Mexico has never been told. The Olmecs from Africa were the first civilization to inhabit Mesoamerica, and in colonial times, the African population in Mexico outnumbered Europeans by three to one. During the 1800s, Africans from the USA immigrated to Mexico to escape enslavement. Other Africans and their descendants from the Caribbean or other parts of Latin America have also immigrated to Mexico.
