Official ID Now Required on Long-Distance Bus Trips in Mexico

Mexicans and Foreigners Must Carry ID to Travel

In an effort to reduce migration from Central America to the United States, the government of Mexico now requires that passengers must present official identification before purchasing a long-distance bus ticket.

Bus companies will now ask for the name and official identification of the passenger. No passengers will be allowed to board without proper identification.

Accepted Identification

Mexican Citizens:

  • Credencial del INE (Voter Registration Card)
  • Cartilla Militar (Military Service Card)
  • Pasaporte Vigente (Passport)
  • Cédula Profesional (Professional License)
  • Licencia de Conducir (Federal Driver’s License)
A Voter’s Registration Card, Passport, or other official document is required.

Foreign Tourists & Foreign Residents in Mexico

  • Passport – the original, not a copy
  • Permanent or Temporary Residency Card
    • Some terminals or vendors may require a Passport, so be prepared
  • Also, present your INAM senior citizen’s card to receive a discount fare
Some bus vendors and terminals may ask for your passport (original).

Local Bus Transportation

Please note that identification is not required for local bus transportation. In some cities, senior citizens with INAM cards can receive a discount fare.
