Mexico City Ranks #2 for Business Travelers
According to the 2018 CWT Meetings & Events Study, a global business travel management company, Mexico City is among the 10 major Latin American cities for the meetings and events for 2019.
According to their report, the main cities in Latin America for meetings and events for 2019 are:
- Sao Paulo, Brazil
- Mexico City, Mexico
- Bogotá, Colombia
- Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Ocho Rios, Jamaica
- Lima, Peru
- Nassau, Bahamas
- Cali, Colombia
- Curitiba, Brazil
- Medellín, Colombia
The survey results include new destinations such as Ocho Rios in Jamaica, Nassau in the Bahamas, Cali in Colombia and Curitiba in Brazil. The cities that no longer appear in the list are destinations such as Atibala, Brazil; Cartagena, Colombia; and Mérida, Mexico.
Argentina, Buenos Aires, has also fallen from the Top 10 list. In 2017, it ranked fifth, and in 2018 it went to the ninth place, while in 2019, it is not included in the top ten cities in the region.
“Mexico City has won the #2 position and is in second place in the regional ranking for 2019,” said Gerardo Vera Prendes, CWT’s Director General for Mexico and Central America, who also highlighted that Cancun is expected to occupy a prominent place soon. In 2019, Cancun will become one of the star destinations for North American companies thanks to its availability of flights and offers.
National elections were held in Mexico in July. There has not been a fall in the demand for meetings after the election of López Obrador. However, there are concerns about the effect that the ongoing renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the United States and Canada will have on the national economy.
Although Latin America as a region always presents challenges, it is expected an improvement in economic conditions and an increase in the demand for meetings. This recovery can is indicated by an increase of 26.7% in the average size of the groups in Latin America.
Despite signs of optimism, economic growth in Latin America is expected to be relatively slow next year, reaching 2.3%, according to the World Bank. The CWT Meetings & Events study predicts that hotel prices will fall by 1.3% in 2019, while air prices will fall by 2%.
