Tour of Morelia - Don Vasco Route

Morelia is an Authentic Mexican Destination

By Jennifer Bjarnason*

Come and explore the opulent, colonial & UNESCO Capital of Michoacan. Morelia is seated in the Guayangareo Valley of the central-western highlands. Fondly called The Soul of Mexico, it is the indigenous home of the Purepecha and Matlatzinca.

Morelia’s Centro is constructed from pink Cantera stone, creating picturesque streets to welcome patrons of countless centuries. With over 200 Baroque and Romantic era buildings, the Aqueduct, Music Conservatory, and Shrine of Our Lady Guadalupe are the most famous.

Morelia’s high concentration of young people and university students attracts hip restaurants, cafes, fun shops, mezcal lounges, and dance clubs. Intellects marvel in fabulous galleries of indigenous handicrafts and modern art. Perhaps the most famous museum is the Museo de Dulce, where candy is made for sampling. Venture the bustling chaos of the Independencia Market, and engage your appetite with an eating experience there.

Special Times to Visit Morelia

Morelia has a number of fantastic festivals and religious observations to consider.  One of the most powerful and curious events to witness here is the Silent Procession on Good Friday. The annual film festival runs for one week every October, hot on the heels of our most famed celebration Dia de Los Muertos, which commences on the evening of November 1.  The international music festival in November is scheduled at various venues over a three-week period, followed by the Sugar Cane Festival and Day of Our Lady Guadalupe on December 12.

Tourist Sites – The Don Vasco Route

Don Vasco de Quiroga was the first Catholic Bishop of Morelia, arriving over 500 years ago. To this day, the Purépecha villages founded by him, proudly maintain their old traditions, while their regional gastronomy and handicrafts are renowned worldwide.

Morelia is an opportune home base for travelers.  You can horseback through steep pine terrain to view monarch butterflies, navigate Natural World Wonder Paricutin Volcano on foot or horseback, bird watching, tour the Pueblo Magico towns of the Lake Patzcuaro region, time-travel at the ancient Purepecha Capital of Tzintzuntzan, or head off the beaten path to the famous musical village of Paracho.

Enjoy this wonderful photographic tour.

Nightlife

After a full day of enticing explorations, unwind in our vibrant city, fine-dine in up-scale restaurants, feast with locals at the Church of St. Augustine, attend a theatre performance, or people-watch at the park next to the magnificent Morelia Cathedral.

Morelia warms the heart at night. Stark shadows cast by the baroque facades of a historic city are diminished by the glimmering lights in the courtyard. There is such delight walking between ornate facades and ancient temples, constructed upon a once wild and untamed wilderness from stones positioned by careful hands – a gift from the ancient architect of God, and the wondrous craftsman of mankind.

Morelia – The Soul of Mexico. We are waiting for your visit!
