SUMMARY:International Literacy Day
DESCRIPTION:International Literacy Day is an opportunity for Governments and our societies to highlight the improvements necessary to increase world literacy rates. The issue of literacy is a key component of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. \nSustainable Development Goal 4 has as one of its targets ensuring all young people achieve literacy and numeracy and that adults who lack these skills are given the opportunity to acquire them. \n2019 Theme: Literacy and Multilingualism\nInternational Literacy Day 2019 is an opportunity to express solidarity with the celebrations of the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages and the 25th anniversary of the World Conference on Special Needs Education. \nInternational Literacy Day 2019 will focus on ‘Literacy and Multilingualism.’ Embracing linguistic diversity in education and literacy development is central to addressing these literacy challenges and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. \n

SUMMARY:International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations General Assembly has declared the decade of 2015-2024 in tribute to Africans and their descendants around the world. \nMany people are unaware of the African presence in Mexico\, but more people were enslaved and shipped into Latin America than into the north. The state of Guerrero\, in particular\, has a large concentration of Afro-Mexicans. The state was named after Vicente Guerrero\, Mexico’s second president\, who was of African-Indigenous descent. He abolished slavery during his administration in 1829. For more information about Afro-Mexicans in Guerrero\, visit: www.FreedomPathways.org

SUMMARY:International Day of The World’s Indigenous Peoples
DESCRIPTION:In 1994\, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed this date to be celebrated every year. Indigenous peoples have sought recognition of their identities\, way of life and their right to traditional lands\, territories and natural resources for years\, yet throughout history; their rights have always been violated. \nIndigenous peoples today\, are arguably among the most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups of people in the world. The international community now recognizes that special measures are required to protect their rights and maintain their distinct cultures and way of life.

SUMMARY:International Day of Friendship - July 30
DESCRIPTION:Our world faces many challenges\, crises and forces of division — such as poverty\, violence\, and human rights abuses — that undermine peace\, security\, development and social harmony among the world’s peoples. \nTo confront those crises and challenges\, their root causes must be addressed by promoting and defending a shared spirit of human solidarity that takes many forms — the simplest of which is friendship. \nThrough friendship\, we can contribute to the fundamental shifts that are urgently needed to achieve lasting stability\, weave a safety net that will protect us all\, and generate passion for a better world where all are united for the greater good. \nToday (and on other days)\, sit down and talk to someone with whom you disagree. Take a new friend to lunch. Reach outside of your comfort zone and learn about other people.

SUMMARY:World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development - May 21
DESCRIPTION:Why does cultural diversity matter?\n\n\nMost of the world’s major conflicts have a cultural dimension. Cultural diversity is a driving force of development\, not only with respect to economic growth but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual\, emotional\, moral and spiritual life. Cultural diversity is an asset that is indispensable for poverty reduction and the achievement of sustainable development. \nAcceptance and recognition of cultural diversity – in particular through innovative use of media and Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) – are conducive to dialogue among civilizations and cultures\, respect and mutual understanding. \nThis Day provides everyone with an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the values of cultural diversity and to advance the four goals of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions: \n\nSupport sustainable systems of governance for culture\nAchieve a balanced flow of cultural goods and services and increase the mobility of artists and cultural professionals\nIntegrate culture in sustainable development frameworks\nPromote human rights and fundamental freedoms

SUMMARY:World Migratory Bird Day - May 11
DESCRIPTION:Protect Birds: Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution!\nPlastic is one of the most widely used materials in the world with an annual production of more than 300 million tons. Plastic is used for its main purpose for only a moment – but\, it has a lifecycle of 20 to 500 years. The discarded pieces are easily transported to ecosystems through the forces of nature causing serious threats to migratory species around the world. \nHow does plastic affect birds? \nSadly\, having wings does not help birds escape the threat of plastic. Dead chicks with stomachs full of plastic\, entangled and smothered by plastic rings and nets are all too real consequences of the toll that plastic takes on birds and other wildlife. \nWhat can YOU do? \nReduce\, reuse and recycle – Limit your use of plastic materials and replace them with eco-friendly alternatives\, use and dispose of plastics sustainably. \nClean up – Join clean-up activities in your area\, whether at beaches or along rivers. \nSpread the word – Support local and global action against excessive\, unnecessary use and detrimental disposal of plastic. \n  \n

According to the proclamation\, the Day is intended to raise awareness in the international community of the virtues of jazz as an educational tool\, and a force for peace\, unity\, dialogue and enhanced cooperation among people. \nMany governments\, civil society organizations\, educational institutions\, and private citizens currently engaged in the promotion of jazz music will embrace the opportunity to foster greater appreciation not only for the music but also for the contribution it can make to building more inclusive societies. \n\nJazz breaks down barriers and creates opportunities for mutual understanding and tolerance;\nJazz is a vector of freedom of expression;\nJazz is a symbol of unity and peace;\nJazz reduces tensions between individuals\, groups\, and communities;\nJazz fosters gender equality;\nJazz reinforces the role youth play for social change;\nJazz encourages artistic innovation\, improvisation\, new forms of expression\, and the inclusion of traditional music forms into new ones;\nJazz stimulates intercultural dialogue and empowers young people from marginalized societies.\n\nJazz was born in New Orleans about 100 years ago (early 20th century)\, but its roots can be found in the musical traditions of both Africa and Europe. In fact\, some people say that jazz is a union of African and European music. \nJazz in Mexico? Listen to: \nJazz! – A Form of Music that Unites the World!

SUMMARY:Flag Day in Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Flag Day is not a public holiday\, but rather a national observance day. Most businesses follow regular opening hours in Mexico. \nThe colors of the Mexican flag – red\, white\, and green – are the national liberation army’s colors. Mexicans first celebrated the country’s current flag on February 24\, 1937. \nThe emblem in the middle of the flag comes from a legendary Aztec story. The Aztecs built their empire on a spot where they found an eagle eating a snake on top of a cactus. It is believed that the incident of the eagle and snake was a sign given by one of their gods and the place where it happened is now Mexico City.
