SUMMARY:International Jazz Day – April 30
DESCRIPTION:In November 2011\, the UNESCO General Conference proclaimed April 30th as “International Jazz Day”. According to the proclamation\, the Day is intended to raise awareness in the international community of the virtues of jazz as an educational tool\, and a force for peace\, unity\, dialogue and enhanced cooperation among people. \nMany governments\, civil society organizations\, educational institutions\, and private citizens currently engaged in the promotion of jazz music will embrace the opportunity to foster greater appreciation not only for the music but also for the contribution it can make to building more inclusive societies. \n\nJazz breaks down barriers and creates opportunities for mutual understanding and tolerance;\nJazz is a vector of freedom of expression;\nJazz is a symbol of unity and peace;\nJazz reduces tensions between individuals\, groups\, and communities;\nJazz fosters gender equality;\nJazz reinforces the role youth play for social change;\nJazz encourages artistic innovation\, improvisation\, new forms of expression\, and the inclusion of traditional music forms into new ones;\nJazz stimulates intercultural dialogue and empowers young people from marginalized societies.\n\nJazz was born in New Orleans about 100 years ago (early 20th century)\, but its roots can be found in the musical traditions of both Africa and Europe. In fact\, some people say that jazz is a union of African and European music. \nJazz in Mexico? Listen to: \nJazz! – A Form of Music that Unites the World!

SUMMARY:International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition
DESCRIPTION:Remember the Slave Trade and Teach!\nBy means of the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition\, UNESCO aims to recall the crucial importance of the transmission of history in order to shed light on the fight against all forms of oppression and racism today. \nThis effort is the eternal effort for the comprehensive affirmation of human dignity\, and UNESCO devotes to it the full force of its mandate\, through education\, culture\, sharing of information and scientific research\, which help to construct in the minds of all ramparts against racism and prejudice. \nThe teaching of the General History of Africa and the Slave Route programme are examples of this. Ignorance is our enemy: \n\nIgnorance is our enemy: it is used as an alibi by the indifferent who state that “we cannot change anything”\, and sanctions the lies of those who claim that “they did not know”. . \nIrina Bokova\nUNESCO Director-General \n\nDownload the UNESCO brochure with lessons and information to teach our children. UNESCO Brochure – Slave Trade.  Also\, watch the BBC Series\, “The History of Africa”  \nMany people are unaware of the African presence in Mexico\, but more people were enslaved and shipped into Latin America than in the north. The state of Guerrero\, in particular\, has a large concentration of Afro-Mexicans. The state was named after Vicente Guerrero\, Mexico’s second president\, who was of African-Indigenous descent. He abolished slavery during his administration in 1829. For more information about Afro-Mexicans in Guerrero\, visit: www.FreedomPathways.org

SUMMARY:International Day of The World’s Indigenous People
DESCRIPTION:Honor and Celebrate Our Native Cultures!\nIn 1994\, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed this date to be celebrated every year. Indigenous peoples have sought recognition of their identities\, their way of life and their right to traditional lands\, territories and natural resources for years. Yet throughout history\, their rights have always been violated. Indigenous peoples today\, are arguably among the most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups of people in the world. The international community now recognizes that special measures are required to protect their rights and maintain their distinct cultures and way of life. \nThe state of Guerrero\, Mexico is one of the most diverse in the country. There are approximately 600\,000 indigenous people living in Guerrero\, about 20% of the total population of the state. There are more than 20 different native languages spoken by its inhabitants\, but the principal one spoken is Náhuatl. Many Mexicans of African descent live in the Costa Chica Region of the state. SUMMARY:UN International Day of Cooperatives
DESCRIPTION:Co-Op Groups Help Local Economic Development\nInternational Co-operative Day is an annual celebration of the co-operative movement observed by the International Co-operative Alliance. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed in resolution 47/90 “the first Saturday of July” to be International Day of Cooperatives. \nThe goals of this International Day are 1) to increase awareness on cooperatives and 2) highlight the complementarity of the goals and objectives of the United Nations and the international cooperative movement. \nCommunity-based co-operative groups work for the sustainable development of their communities – environmentally\, socially and economically. They support community activities\, local sourcing of supplies to benefit the local economy\, and they are involved in decision-making that considers the impact on their communities. \nRelated Article: Women’s Co-op in Barra de Potosi Make Innovative Mexican Crafts \n
