SUMMARY:International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
DESCRIPTION:From the UN Website: \nPoverty is not solely an economic problem\nIn a world characterized by an unprecedented level of economic development\, technological means\, and financial resources\, the fact that millions of persons are living in extreme poverty is a moral outrage. \nPoverty is not solely an economic issue\, but rather a multidimensional phenomenon that encompasses a lack of both income and the basic capabilities to live in dignity. \nPersons living in poverty experience many interrelated and mutually reinforcing deprivations that prevent them from realizing their rights and perpetuate their poverty\, including: \n\ndangerous work conditions\nunsafe housing\nlack of nutritious food\nunequal access to justice\nlack of political power\nlimited access to health care\n\nThe United Nations General Assembly\, in its resolution 47/196 of 22 December 1992\, marks 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

SUMMARY:UN International Day of Non-Violence
DESCRIPTION:In Dedication to Mahatma Gandhi\nThis day is dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi\, who helped lead India to independence. Gandhi was committed to his belief in non-violence even under oppressive conditions and in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. \nHe has been the inspiration for non-violent movements for civil rights and social change across the world. \nAccording to the UN: \nOne key tenet of the theory of non-violence is that the power of rulers depends on the consent of the population\, and non-violence\, therefore\, seeks to undermine such power through withdrawal of the consent and cooperation of the populace. \nThere are three main categories of non-violence action: \n\nprotest and persuasion\, including marches and vigils;\nnon-cooperation; and\nnon-violent intervention\, such as blockades and occupations.
