UN International Day of Cooperatives
July 1, 2018
Co-Op Groups Help Local Economic Development
International Co-operative Day is an annual celebration of the co-operative movement observed by the International Co-operative Alliance. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed in resolution 47/90 “the first Saturday of July” to be International Day of Cooperatives.
The goals of this International Day are 1) to increase awareness on cooperatives and 2) highlight the complementarity of the goals and objectives of the United Nations and the international cooperative movement.
Community-based co-operative groups work for the sustainable development of their communities – environmentally, socially and economically. They support community activities, local sourcing of supplies to benefit the local economy, and they are involved in decision-making that considers the impact on their communities.
