Mexico is a Good Place to See Birds!

By: Alexia Malinalli Rodríguez Cortés*

Do you love nature? I love birds! Mexico is ranked 8th place in the world for the highest number of bird species, almost 1,100!  You can come to Mexico to have a tour of birds!

Birds are vertebrates mainly characterize by their adaptation to flight. Their bodies are covered by feathers and they are endothermic, which means they keep their temperatures constant through metabolism. A new study suggests there are about 18,000 species all around the world.

In Ixtapa Zihuatanejo and in other cities on the Pacific coast of Mexico, there are several types of bird habitats, such as the coastal coastline, the deciduous and sub-deciduous forest, the mangrove and the plantations, which result in the abundance of bird species in the region. In the Ixtapa Zihuatanejo area, it is estimated that there are about 320 different bird species, almost a third of the total species found in the total country.

Of the species we can find in this area, half of the population are residents which means they are present all year. The other half are migratory and visit periodically, especially during winter. The area of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo is a privileged place both for the bird fans and for the ones who study these birds because to find a place where you can watch such a diversity of birds is so difficult, and besides this place is a tourist destination it makes it doubly attractive.

Included in the resident birds that we find in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo are the carrot, the magpie, the brown spring, the picuyo, the aura, the green heron, the cormorant, the hummingbird and the cardinal. The most common migratory birds in the zone are the white pelican, the blue heron, and the stork.
