The African Presence in Mexico
AFRO-LATINO TRAVELS with Kim Haas is a groundbreaking travelogue that captures the heart and soul of Afro-Latino culture. Each episode celebrates the dynamic richness and diversity of people of African descent in Mexico, throughout the Caribbean, and Central, and South America.
Host Kim Hass recently interviewed Professor Patricia Ann Talley, founder, publisher, and editor of Imagine-Mexico.com, who has conducted research on the African presence in the Costa Chica areas of Guerrero and Oaxaca.
Professor Talley collaborates with Dr. Candelaria Mendez Tello, the president of Mexico Negro, A.C., one of the leading civil rights organizations in the country and consults in economic development.
Most people, especially English speakers, know nothing about the African presence in Mexico. According to the 2020 Census, over 2.5 million people in México are of African descent, representing 2% of the country’s population. The states of Guerrero (8.6%), Oaxaca (4.7%), Baja California Sur (3.3%), and Veracruz (2.7%) have the highest concentrations. The largest population of foreign-born African descendants living in Mexico are from the United States.
