Women have made great advances in many sectors of Mexican society, despite the long-standing cultural tradition of women being encouraged to follow only domestic and family-centered career paths. Today, there are Mexican women who are international celebrities, like Salma Hayek, a soap actress and film star, and golfer Lorena Ochoa.
A woman of distinction in the field of education is Professor Carolina Herrera de Saldaña of the Universidad Autónoma de Guerrero, who directs the Department of Student Affairs for all university campuses and high schools throughout the state. She is best known for her contributions and dedication to the youth and people of Guerrero.

The Universidad Autónoma de Guerrero, whose institutional acronyms are UAGro, is a public institution of secondary education and higher education whose main campus is located in Chilpancingo, Guerrero, Mexico. It has thirteen campuses throughout the state, including a school of tourism in Zihuatanejo. The university offers thirty-four bachelor degrees and twenty-nine graduate-level degrees in the areas of agricultural sciences, health, natural sciences, social and administrative services, education and the humanities, business, tourism, and engineering. UAGro also operates forty high schools throughout the state.
Professor Carolina Herrera de Saldaña is involved in many aspects of student life on campus and in the high schools. She works with students, helping them with housing, and acquiring equipment like beds, stoves, computers, etc. She is concerned with the welfare of our future professionals.
Through UAGro’s Department of Student Affairs, Professor Carolina Herrera de Saldaña (pictured in the center) is involved in many aspects of student life on campuses and in high schools throughout the state.
The professor also invests her time supporting academic and athletic initiatives of young people. She encourages students to develop their ideas and innovations that will enhance the various industries within Guerrero. She also encourages students to participate in athletics because physical activity teaches values of solidarity, friendship, and achievement.
During crises, such as tropical storm Manuel that hit the state of Guerrero in September of 2013, Professor Herrera de Saldaña was at the forefront, coordinating activities in the university’s colleges of medicine, psychology, and dentistry to assist affected residents throughout the area.

But, with all her of various work activities, Professor Carolina Herrera de Saldaña never puts aside her family. She is the wife of UAGro’s chancellor, Dr. Javier Saldaña Almazan and attends many University and community activities with him. Her children are the important part of her life. She teaches them the values that are part of the university, such as effort, dedication, commitment, honesty, respect, and leadership.

Loved by her husband and children, respected by her colleagues, and appreciated by the students, Carolina Herrera Saldaña is an example for young people to follow and a leader in the field of education.
