Tune-in to our kids and learn about their music!
This year, I am teaching a communications class, in English, to seniors at a high school in Zihuatanejo. Oh! What an interesting experience. I am learning a lot!
I invited the kids to contribute to the music section this month by submitting a list of their favorite songs. In my day, we had radio and everyone could hear the music. But today, our youth have earphones and are streaming music on their smartphones.
So, what are they listening to? I was shocked when I searched the list on YouTube. Shocked! OMG! These are Spanish speaking kids listening to foul-language and seeing inappropriate behavior on these videos!
My first reaction was to censor the list and only include the “nice” songs. But instead, I’m sharing some of these videos with you so that other teachers, adults, and parents know and learn too.
In all fairness to the students, they are bi-lingual and may not know the significance or cultural context of the language in these songs. So, my next class will be about “appropriate” language.
WARNING! That’s the point…
Lil Pump – “Gucci Gang” (Official Music Video)
This video is in Spanish, but you’ll understand the behavior. It can be used to teach the kids about appropriate behavior in their academic and professional lives.
Farruko, Bad Bunny, Rvssian – Krippy Kush (Official Video)
No need to show more. You get the point. . .
Tune-in to our kids!
