What a fabulous start to the Christmas holiday!
Surprised? A children’s orchestra in Zihuatanejo?
Currently, the city is participating in a state-wide project to create a symphonic orchestra for children and adolescents. The objective of the project is to help prevent delinquency among minors by involving them in constructive activities.
This musical project is the creation of Amilcar Torres, the director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Acapulco. The orchestra project was initiated in Zihuatanejo in November 2013 with the participation of 140 children from low-income families. The children are guided by teachers who give instruction on music theory and musical instruments. The children work hard with their teachers from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. every day. The orchestra has twenty-five different musical instruments and a choral group.
Music means a lot to little children. The ages of the participants range from six years old to thirty years old. Some members have physical disabilities. Music provides an outlet for expression, a positive activity, and, may lead to a future career for some students.
Mark your calendar to catch their performance this year!
