Wednesday, June 1, DIA DE LA MARINA NACIONAL (NATIONAL MARINE DAY): A national holiday, Marine Day is a solemn occasion for the nation of Mexico, when the National Flag is hoisted at full mast. Zihuatanejo has been an important port since colonial times. There is a navy station at the port and a Naval Hospital in Ixtapa. In 1942, the first of June was established as Marine Day in tribute to all, who with their work, personal sacrifice, participation, and cooperation at all levels, contributed to the birth and consolidation of the maritime sector in the country. On this day, Zihuatanejo pays tribute to our local navy personnel and the fishermen, tour operators, watersports operators, marine merchants, and others who care for our oceans and waters.
