The United Nations World Tourism Organization has dedicated the year 2017 to Sustainable Tourism Development. In order to be sustainable and develop tourism, a community must be concerned with conserving the environment, social inclusion, economic development, education, and the overall well-being of its members.
The Por Los Niños Educational Charity of Zihuatanejo is an example of how a local charity can work with the tourism industry, the municipality, many residents, and international volunteers to raise funds to provide educational opportunities for low-income children. Since 2002, this charity has donated, raised funds, and built more than one hundred classrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and playgrounds for disadvantaged children in the Zihuatanejo area. Nearly five thousand young students have benefited from their efforts.
Ixtapa Zihuatanejo is a beautiful tourist destination on the Pacific – but, we must remember that its luxury and splendor is not shared by all. The reality for many local students is different. Por Los Niños Educational Charity tries to make a difference by supporting the Casa Pacifica School that provides special educational programs for high-achieving, low-income students. Listen . . .
Zihuatanejo Sailfest Fundraising Event: Monday, February 6 – Sunday, February 12, 2017
The main fundraising event for Por Los Niños charity is the annual Zihuatanejo Sailfest—a six-day festival held the first week of every February that combines fun, games, and beach activities. Sailboats come from as far away as Alaska and the Caribbean to participate in what is becoming one of Mexico’s premier sailing events. This event includes sailboat and dingy races, music concerts, a kids’ beach day, seminars, a chili cook-off, street fairs, regattas, and school tours—all to raise funds for education.
The state Secretary of Education stated that the Zihuatanejo Sailfest is the most successful educational fundraiser in the state of Guerrero. In addition to cash donations, more than two hundred local businesses in Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo donate thousands of dollars in gifts and services, and over thirty local and international musicians perform at benefit concerts.
So, if residents, tourists, and visitors – If you really want to help our kids, then join us for the Zihuatanejo Sailfest!
