Medical and Health Care Services for Tourists in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo

doctorTourists don’t necessarily think about obtaining medical services in Mexico, but Ixtapa Zihuatanejo offers wonderful health care services. Mexico provides universal health care for all of its residents and easily-accessible medical services for its tourists and visitors. Also, it is important to know that, in case of an accident or emergency, specialists and hospitals are available for your care.


Tourists often indulge in different foods, sea foods, extra beers and too much sun. This change of diet and climate may cause stomach problems. On occasion, people with serious aliments have some type of health problem and need medical attention.

If you need to see a doctor, most of the big hotels and resorts in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo have an “in-house” physician who will come and treat you for any ailment. You will be charged for their services; the cost generally runs about $50 USD for a visit. Most hotel doctors are bilingual (Spanish-English).

There are many Private Clinics in the Ixtapa Zihuatanejo area for general medicine, gastroenterology, traumatology, gynecology, cardiology, pediatrics, dermatology, ophthalmology, etc. The average cost to see a specialist is about $500 Pesos or about $25.00 USD.

Many tourists, however, have discovered that you can obtain low-cost medical treatment at the medical clinic at “Farmacias Similares,” which is a national chain of medical centers, pharmacies and laboratories. Branches are located throughout the Ixtapa Zihuatanejo area. It is easy to spot the pharmacy’s red, white and blue sign (see the photo). Doctors are available from 8 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Most doctors speak enough English to communicate with you about your aliment. The cost  is just $30 Pesos! That’s right – only about $1.50 USD! Amazing!

Farmacias Similares Building

You can also take advantage of the laboratory at “Farmacia Similaris” that offers complete packages for check-up testing and analysis. Your results are usually available the next day and you can take your analysis, x-ray or ultrasound results with you.

Medicines and Health Care Products

Health care products like vitamins, aspirin, dietary supplements, shampoo, toothpaste, etc. are also available at pharmacies throughout Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. If you need a prescription drug, you must see a doctor. Again, doctors are available in the hotels, in Private Clinics and at “Farmacias Similares” in downtown Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo.

Dental and Optical Care

Cost-savvy tourists and visitors take advantage of the low cost of high-quality dental and optical care in Mexico. There are several dentists and opticians in the Ixtapa Zihuatanejo area.

I can speak from experience. I went to the USA to have my dental work done under my Medicare and supplemental insurance plan. The estimate was $9,000 with my co-payment of $4,500. Ha! Got on a plane back to Mexico and received the exact same dental services for a TOTAL COST of $575 USD!

Emergency Care

When traveling, it is comforting to know that in case you have a more serious illness or accident, Ixtapa Zihuatanejo has three hospitals: Hospital IMSS, operated by the Social Security Institute; Hospital General, operated by the State Government Health Department; and Hospital Naval, operated by the Mexican Navy. All of them will treat tourists. “Hospital General” in Zihuatanejo has dialysis equipment and “Hospital Naval” in Ixtapa has a Hyperbaric Chamber for emergencies. Zihuatanejo also has Cruz Roja Mexicana, the Mexican Red Cross for emergencies and general practice.

Don’t over-indulge and always take safety precautions with beach activities! But, should you need to see a doctor or have some type of medical emergency while on vacation, rest assured that you can obtain low-cost medical, dental or optical services here in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo.
