Saturday, March 15, 8:00 a.m. #23 CLEAN THE BEACH CAMPAIGN on Playa Linda in front of Azul Ixtapa Beach Resort: Everyone is responsible for maintaining our environment! Come out early in the morning and help clean up the beach! Over 1,700 people have participated and removed over 40,000 lbs. of trash.
NOTE DATE: Sunday, March 16, 7:30 a.m., FOURTH ANNUAL 5K WALK FOR HELENE KREBS ANIMAL FOUNDATION, on Paseo de Viveros in Ixtapa: Come out and support our local animal shelter. Helen Krebs was one of the first American women to live in Zihuatanejo. The animal shelter is named in her memory. The shelter helps hundreds of stray and injured animals each year. You can sign up to walk at Casa Marina Restaurant, on the main beach in Zihuatanejo. A minimum donation of $30 Pesos is requested. Monday, March 17, ST. PATRICK’S DAY / “SAN PATRICIOS” MEMORIAL: On St. Patrick’s Day, México honors its Irish immigrants who fought during the invasion by the United States in the 1840s. Poetry can communicate the innermost values of our culture and preserves our history and traditions. In Zihuatanejo, the tradition is preserved by Sociedad Internaciónal de Poetas, Escritores y Artistas (International Society of Poets, Writers and Artists).

Tuesday, March 25, INTERNATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE OF THE VICTIMS OF SLAVERY AND THE TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE: For over 400 years, more than 15 million men, women and children were the victims of the tragic transatlantic slave trade. This international day of remembrance, offers the opportunity to honor and remember those who suffered and died at the hands of the brutal slavery system and aims at raising awareness about the dangers of racism and prejudice today. This year’s theme, “Victory over Slavery: Haiti and Beyond” pays tribute to the fight against slavery in nations around the world. Haiti was the first nation to become independent as a result of the struggle of enslaved men and women in 1804. This year also celebrates the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO Slave Route Project that has produced multimedia educational materials, available for educators, pupils, and the general public.
