According to Mexico’s Federal Secretary of Tourism (SECTUR), the tourist destination of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Guerrero ranks 10th in the nation in hotel room rentals to foreigners, while Acapulco, a much larger tourist destination in Guerrero, ranks 12th. From January to April 2013, Ixtapa Zihuatanejo rented 119,468 hotel rooms to foreigners, while during the same period Acapulco rented a total of 78,056 hotel rooms to foreigners.
Ixtapa Zihuatanejo is a small tourist resort area compared to other Mexican destinations. First in hotel room rentals to foreigners is Riviera Maya with 3,699,535 units rented during the same time period; second is Cancun with 2,175,180 units rented; third is Playa del Carmen with 636,360 units rented; fourth is Cabo San Lucas with 525,419 units rented; fifth is Puerto Vallarta with 493,948 units; followed by Nuevo Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit, Cozumel, Mazatlan and Ixtapa Zihuatanejo.
The resort area of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo is positioning itself as one of the favorite tourist spots in the world. Ixtapa Zihuatanejo’s beaches and hotel properties have recently received several international travel awards from Trip Advisor and Condé Nast Traveler, among others. Tourism in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo is also being supported with new initiatives by the State of Guerrero to better promote the area and increase air travel.
In addition to being an award-winning travel destination, Ixtapa Zihuatanejo is certified as a “Culture of Peace Community” in partnership with the United Nations. Each year, its students and community members participate in workshops about peace and non-violence and conduct a Peace Festival. Ixtapa Zihuatanejo also has a Clean Beach Certification Program to provide a pristine environment for tourists and residents. Through the year, the community hosts a variety of activities and Special Events for the enjoyment of singles, couples and families.
