Every year on the International Day of Peace, the United Nations calls on the peoples of the world to remember their common humanity and join together to build a future free of strife. It calls on all of us to observe a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, and to honor a cessation of hostilities for the duration of the Day.
This year’s theme – the Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace – highlights how ending poverty, protecting the planet and ensuring broadly shared prosperity all contribute to global harmony. When we all work together, we can make peace possible, starting with 24 hours of peace on September 21.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were unanimously adopted by the 193 Member States of the United Nations at an historic summit in September 2015. They are universal, applying to all countries. And they are integral to achieving peace. When people feel secure in their abilities to provide for their families, when they are given access to the resources they need to live healthy lives, and when they feel truly included in their societies, then they are much less likely to engage in conflict.
We must recognize that development and peace are interdependent and mutually reinforcing. We need to work together to help promote and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The leaders of the world have given us a clear blueprint, and by following it, we can help build a future of peace and prosperity.
For the third year, Camino de la Paz and partners, local Rotary clubs and Allende la Cultura will organize a celebration of the UN International Peace Day in San Miguel at Parque Juarez. The goal is to let people know that peace is really possible; that it starts with each one of us; to present existing programs that are making peace happen, here and around the world; and to offer people ways to express their desire for peace and ways to get involved.
This year residents of Infonavit Malanquin will participate in a four-day forum called “Paz en las Escuelas” (Peace in the Schools) organized by the state of Guanajuato and five municipalities. Collaborative activities will be offered by Santa Fe Learning, Tai Chi by Lydia Wong, and meditation and prayers for peace will be offered alongside World Café sessions. Local and international nonprofits will present programs that foster peace and community building. In addition, a space will be dedicated by local leaders in Parque Juarez where organizers hope to build a Peace Pole.
Individuals and groups are invited to participate in any peaceful manner. For instance, presenting what a group has already done that promotes peace in the community, or presenting peace projects being planned. Children could sing in a choir, or you could bring peace mojigangas. Promotion and space with a table and chairs will be provided with advance notice. Please help spread the word by inviting your friends and referring them to facebook.com/CaminoDeLaPazSMA.
