Monday, December 12, DAY OF THE VIRGIN OF GUADALUPE: People from throughout the country travel to the Basilica of the Virgen of Guadalupe located in Villa de Guadalupe Hidalgo, a northern neighborhood of Mexico City, where they celebrate the Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe (Our Lady of Guadalupe) with a mass ceremony and a traditional fair in her honor. Parades and masses will be held in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo and throughout the local area. The holiday is a national fiesta that includes traditional music and fun attractions.
The holiday is a remembrance of the appearance of the Virgin Mary to Juan Diego, a young indigenous man, who on December 12, 1531, had a vision of her while walking. The Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego was a young woman with black hair and dark skin which looked more like an indigenous person. Mary became the patron saint of Mexico in 1746. The Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe became a national holiday in Mexico in 1859.
Saturday, December 31 at Midnight, FIREWORKS! You can see them from the beach in Zihuatanejo or in Ixtapa. The community comes out to celebrate the New Year with fireworks. BUT, BE CAREFUL! There are many homes and condos with palm roofs, so we must safeguard surrounding properties!
